Holunder - Berry of ‘em all

One of the best parts of the end of summer work, is the harvesting rewards along the way.

And I get the extra joy, of Omi Maria’s delight, when “yes grandma - you know elderberry, it was native in Bavaria too & thats another reason I love it”.

I don’t mind at all you have to cook it first, especially since they are so fruitful and healthy.

Omi Maria says with pears is best. I think as smash berry syrup in a fresh gluten free (yes can be 100% tasty & right) rule of 3’s german pancake (3 eggs / 3 cups fav replacement flour / 3 cups whole milk - hot buttered pan). As soon as the pears are ripe, I’m trying her way, she’s always right.

Another “best” are the late season plant finds.

Like when an unplanned dental visit leads to the discovery of a 1 gallon price, on 5 gallon, what appear to be parent plants, of zone appropriate heirloom (non-patented) Elderberry varieties, not yet in the ground at the farm.

Which likely means, a tastier spring for more of us, so thanks for not knowing the value of these plants down in the big city, so the landscaper gave up, and us country growers can have at it.

We appreciate your help & we will make sure they grow out right. 😁

Just add a lil good butter & a touch of sugar (you know, the secret ingredients right?)

Tasty with the Shishito Peppers my fiancee has us growing. I keep trying to have enough to bring to market, but Cuyler loves them so much I can’t keep up. Good thing the baseline is holding & we are working on more growing space now.

And, 3 of the 4 who truly taught me so much of what allows today to be my today ~ from left to right, Tante (Aunt) Fani, Uncle Hans, & my wonderful Grandma, Omi Maria. The photo was taken quite a few years back now in Tante Fani & Uncle Hans Austrian home, around a dinner table that almost ONLY saw fresh home cooking. We were blessed to visit when I was a little girl, and they had beautiful gardens, fruit trees, THE BEST chocolate shelf to pick from in the evening, & the neighbors massive strawberry fields that we were allowed to play and eat in, just out back. Growing what you eat, has always been the family roots.
