Yes - Late Season Veggie Starts & Next to Town Saturday for Rummage Day

How did I over seed my bed?! I start seeds, all season long. Yes - really!

When I started out East, bunny’s were extinct where I lived. I missed them - but I did not miss the extra challenges they bring for outside growers. The humidity was also crazy high always, even in the log cabin, so all I had to do was turn on the lights, for pre-season starts.

Fast forward to Spring 2024: my barn-house no humidity was a battle, then my window screen hail protection stands said NOPE, we catch too much wind - and the bunnies hopped up on the stands to chow down & also took advantage of the tip.

SO - I reverted back to outside growing only, even the starts. I’m working on getting chickens into the coop & setting an indoor start area - but thats fall work for winter fun.

Because the weather gives us a rumbling start, but then such an amazingly long season - AND - many perennials don’t bloom until year 2 - I just continually start them as they will naturally go dormant as nature tells them to & I’ll start vegetables and self-seeding annuals until about the last week of June.

I call the late season veggie starts “hail insurance” because its so frustrating to work so hard getting your garden going, to see it demolished before you got to snack.

And it just seems like after mid-June, even at big standard stores, it can be really tough & expensive, to find replacements - even though there’s plenty of time to reach harvest.

It also allows me to work toward bringing more food options, in addition to the flowers, to market.

Currently I have some lettuce, watermelon, squash & slicing cucumbers started, along with a fun current tomato variety. I’m trying to find a “spoonfuls” type or equivalent.

Next up to be seeded are shishito peppers, bells, & slicing tomatoes.

All these littles grown out (tomatoes get their 1st pinch off for growth today) will be $3.

Because it’s not too late to get growing, until the dirts frozen.

All our beautiful rain = digging time.

Next to-town is planned for Saturday. I am aiming for mid-morning to early afternoon, at my favorite sitting spot, Canby Central Park. I’ll post it on Underground when I arrive.
