I love chatting with people about growing & dirt.
I really appreciate the excitement for the future berry & fruit orchards (gotta keep working on adding those strawberries enmass & yup hopefully not too long & make your own Elderberry syrup can be reasonable).
If you are picking up one of those beautiful BROAD leaf Hydrangea’s from runnings, don’t forget they are excellent natural PH testers & if you like the blue flowers but they start to fade, grab some Soil Acidifier to blue them back up. I like them better than a soil tester & intend to plant several in the future fruit orchard to monitor the soil for the blueberries.
And of course… those pesky valuable native Black Walnut trees, that come with Juglone.
There are many flowers & shrubs that don’t mind & I will work to mark the varieties I offer in the future since its such a common tree here. I personally put the tulip bulb bed in around, to make best use where ours is at, but there are many more options including:
Flowers: New England Aster, Great Blue Lobelia, Wild Geranium, Blue Flag Iris, Yarrow, Bee Balm, Tulips & Phlox, particularly Woodland Phlox.
Shrubs: Mock Orange, Elderberry, Hazelnut, Witch Hazel, Forsythia, & Dogwood.
