@ the Farm: 2026 Season Started

Boy that got Rowdy! I'm glad the worst of the winds blew by pretty quick. There's NO way the rain was only 0.15, and I truly wonder how far some of those raindrops flew. It's always a tough moment, deep breath, roll the barn door open and see what sun up shows. Thankfully, few branches down safely, and only two more established trees with severe damage - and easy fix on the fence for the worst one. Its so delightful to watch some seeds take off. The benefit to our recent rains & humidity. Starting to pluck out & pot up the romaine’s, so the carrots can have their space back. I have Salvia seeds I need to get growing from this beauty. I can’t wait for the Shasta to bloom. Last year my USDA Plant Inspector was surprised I was growing them in boxes. Sadly they don’t do as well as in the ground (I’m working on the in ground area fencing soon), but this baby was worth it! I

How did I over seed my bed?! I start seeds, all season long. Yes - really! When I started out East, bunny’s were extinct where I lived. I missed them - but I did not miss the extra challenges they bring for outside growers. The humidity was also crazy high always, even in the log cabin, so all I had to do was turn on the lights, for pre-season starts. Fast forward to Spring 2024: my barn-house no humidity was a battle, then my window screen hail protection stands said NOP

As I am wandering around checking flower sets & watching the clouds pop up, I noticed my first whoopsie that I have to share. The, I thought only seeded Ice Ballet (White thin leaf) Milkweed bed, has Rose (Medium Pink thin leaf) Milkweed popping up as well. Walk around today provided some lovely fuel for the #Believe Confirmed a River Otter really did stay, it was having a blast hunting on the south beaver dam: Milkweed joining the wild bergamot in showing itself, everywhere: Field Chickweed & Prairie Violets popping up too:

Ice Ballet is growing in nicely, thin-pulling for market offerings. The weather roller coaster has me circling. Extra heatwave dried me out & trying not to blow away. I sure miss the old pattern of reliable rains for a hard stop to rest without feeling guilty. Plants are coming out of dormancy nicely: I can’t wait until the phlox starts blooming. Its never soon enough. Trying to find my “scoot to town” time, hopefully soon. Happy sunshine!

I have always believed, if nature is going to provide 2 of the 3 optimal growing conditions, & you can supplement the 3rd, you have to grow for it. Take any opportunity you can, to push that line out. Since we had a massively warm heat wave come in right as we gained an extra hour of light, I got after seeding and watering. I slightly over-baked myself, with soak-misting seeding beds 4x a day, and soak watering potted 2x a day. I think I'm about 12 gallons of water back in

Evidence of a new baby bird in the 'hood today, the first egg shell I had seen this year so, wohoo! The Native Columbine are blooming left & right so hopefully folks are starting to see that lovely color on the ones they've taken home. I seeded out some other Columbine varieties today including a Blue & White McKenna (William) and a Black Barlow (Ryan), culled from last year, along with Rudbeckia and Coreopsis. Always such a pleasure to chat with everyone. Thank you so much for all who popped by, I can’t wait to hear what you think about the great native Columbine as they get their first blooms soon. They are just a such a happy plant. I’ll be working on potting up more plants as they come out of dormancy. Weather dependent I’ll try to come back the regular Thursday afternoon. Hope everybody’s getting outside enjoying bird migration. It seems like the hums should be popping up soon.

What a gift of some great moisture this morning. I hope everyone who needed it got a sprinkle. I am working toward 11:00 - 2:00 @ the park (if someone isn’t celebrating graduation). I checked the paper, but if someone is there for a party, I don’t want to impose. Next will be the usual Thursday afternoon if the weather isn’t rowdy. If the rain comes in I’ll roll Friday instead. I love chatting with people about growing & dirt. I really appreciate the excitement for the future berry & fruit orchards (gotta keep working on adding those strawberries enmass & yup hopefully not too long & make your own Elderberry syrup can be reasonable). What a beautiful morning - to pot up! Working on more native columbine, & see who else is ready to come to town. I aiming for 2pm, try to stay past 5. If anyone is trying to get my way & you need me to stay later, please do let me know. I get to rest my arm, catch up on my reading & see all the pretty town birds, so I enjoy my park time. I think Sun / Mon we still have some hard frost left, but getting to the end, so did the Elder Spring Split. Perennial power will be on display, later today. Good hard frost this morning - but - Perennial Power is the best. If your free native columbine looks droopy - no worries, just let it rest. The beauty of native & outdoor grown & held over is their natural resistance to the local weather cycles. AND - the next round, seeds in the ground can benefit from experiencing a few rounds, on their way to lil sprouts. I’ll add recovered photos later. Working on more ready for market
